Weekend Wanderlust in Rhode Island

Newport Cliff Walk - Kelsey Social

One of my favorite ways to travel is to visit friends in their cities. When my college friend Stephanie started her residency at a hospital in Providence, my travel buddy Shannon and I booked our flights for a fall visit.

Since Rhode Island is so small and Stephanie has a car, we were able to visit both Newport and Providence in one weekend. On our way out to Newport, we found the best breakfast spot on Main Street in East Greenwich. Dante's Kitchen had quick service with delicious waffles and breakfast sandwiches. Be sure to order a cup of their nitro cold brew!

After breakfast, we drove to Newport to check out the Historic Newport Cliff Walk. The warm November sun may have been a contributing factor, but I adored this Cliff Walk. Walking along the water was so peaceful and we loved admiring the mansions along the way.

After the cliff walk, we rewarded ourselves with drinks and a sunset at the gorgeous Castle Hill Inn and lighthouse before ending the night with dinner back in East Greenwich. Besos was a great choice for dinner complete with dirty martinis and PB&J cheesecake.

The next morning was quite dreary so we needed warm donuts to cure the rainy day blues. Allie's Donuts is a Rhode Island institution. If you get the chance to go, don't skip it! The donuts were big, fresh and cheap. The apple cinnamon crumble donut was my favorite. And don't worry, the long line moves fast.

After recovering from our donut binge, we braved the gloomy day to walk around downtown Providence. Charming Benefit Street and Brown University's campus were some favorite stops. We also found the cutest card shop: Craftland.

As the rain started to fall, we made our way to Federal Hill for the best happy hour deals at Providence Oyster Bar. One dollar oysters/shrimps/clams and $6 for basically anything else. The extensive cocktail menu and oyster shooters were also a treat. If I'm ever back in Providence, I will be sure to go back!

We had our fill of oysters and felt guilty about hogging prime seats at the bar, so we walked down the street to find a dark and dingy dive bar calling our name. Rock an Rye had 90s music playing and board games galore (Jenga, Connect Four, etc.). Not the classiest place, but that's not what were were looking for either.

Rhode Island surprised me in the best way possible. Luckily for me, an ER doctor's residency lasts three years so I have an air mattress in Stephanie's apartment awaiting my return! On my next visit, I'd like to do a Newport Mansion Tour, wander around downtown Providence and the Federal Hill neighborhood in better weather, eat brunch at Kitchen, and visit Roger Williams Park.
